Car Registration Clone

20 11 2007
I recently received a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) aka a speed camera ticket.  On closer investigation I realised that I was not in the area of the speed camera on the date of the offence.  After informing the police I was sent the photographic evidence which confirmed the date and time.  The photo was almost identical to my car and it did have the same registration number, but there was one obvious difference – my car had ‘euro’ plates where as the one that was photographed did not.  I could not believe it, an almost identical clone of my vehicle.

After writing to the DVLA, they were very helpful and offered me a new registration number for my vehicle which I accepted.  I was surprised at how easy the process was to get the new registration number and tax disk.  Even changing the insurance details was relatively painless.  I did have to pay £12.50 for the new plates though – ‘euro’ ones of course.

The advice from DirectGov is here:

Moral of the story – if you do get a NIP – double/triple check it, it might not be you after all!

Hopefully the police can now catch the imposter!
